		<description>It is definitely possible to apply for benefits while working, however, you must keep your gross earnings to less than $980 per month in 2009.  If you earn more than $980 per month, you are not eligible to apply unless you can prove that you have impairment related work expenses (IRWE) that reduce your remaining income to less than $980 per month in 2009. Please see the Social Security Administration website for more information about IRWE - https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0410520010.

If you make more than $980 per month in 2009, and do not have impairment related work expenses, you are not permitted to apply for benefits. Your only choice would be to continue working, or to reduce your income so that you are able to at least apply.  Before reducing your income, I would recommend that you follow the suggestions in the article above.
